As you explore the unspoiled natural beauty of this corner of the Maremma, you may come across herds of grazing cattle and horses. Passing through lush pine forests and along the coastal beaches, you’ll easily reach your destination, where you’ll find a fascinating bird-watching spot. The trail is 4.8 kilometers long and takes about an hour and a half to complete.

The route begins at the bike path in Marina di Alberese and follows the embankment of the large canal built to protect the coast, with the sea visible beyond the pine forest. Along the way, Maremma cows and horses graze just a few meters from the road, oblivious to the cyclists passing by. Near the mouth of the canal, you’ll come across the large San Paolo water pump and the sluice gates that regulate the flow of brackish water—an unexpected spot, almost as if it were frozen in time.
The final destination is Bocca d’Ombrone, where the river meets the sea. Here you can witness geology in action: the waters of the Ombrone stretch out toward the open sea, depositing sediments on the beaches for three thousand years. It’s worth stopping at the bird-watching hide: herons, flamingos, and many other species frequent this area—with a little luck and silence, a spectacular sight is guaranteed.
