This is the route for those who want something more. It’s not just about the physical challenge—it’s about history, scenery, and that feeling of cycling through a place where time has stood still.

For more experienced cyclists, we recommend the picturesque and historic “Medieval Trail,” which is 10 kilometers long and has an elevation gain of 235 meters. Also well-known is the route leading to the Benedictine Abbey of San Rabano, dating back to the 11th century, whose imposing ruins can still be admired today. This route can also be extended all the way to Collelungo Beach and Marina di Alberese.

The route starts at the Alberese cemetery, descends to the foot of Spaccasso, and, upon reaching the Piscina del Prete, joins the ancient medieval road of San Rabano—a path that Benedictine monks were already traveling as early as the 11th century. From here, the route climbs through dense, fragrant Mediterranean scrub along technical trails that require good leg strength and bike control.

The destination isthe Abbey of San Rabano: its ruins are surrounded by a picturesque forest of downy oaks, with a watchtower nearby that was once part of the coastal defense system. Arriving here on a bike feels different—you’ve earned it. As you climb toward the highest point, the view opens up to the Granducale pine forest, the towers of Castel Marino and Collelungo, the mouth of the Ombrone River, and the entire coastal plain—on a clear day, you can see Giglio, Montecristo, and Elba.

For those who still have energy to spare, the route can be extended all the way to Collelungo Beach and Marina di Alberese, turning the outing into a truly epic day spent among the woods, history, and the sea.
